This sounds like Woody Gunthrie--and the movie Glory Bound-- what a character he was. I sent my copy of that movie to a friend in Australia but it wouldn't play in her machine, so I lost it. Your poem...

"he wore those cool notes like a sad overcoat converting rhyme into sleek syllables of lullabies for Broadway" These lines bring the sounds and scene home for me. I am there...ah those bebop blues!!...
